Timeline from first symptom to diagnosis

Our son Connor was diagnosed with JDM in January of 2010 and here is a bit of a timeline to show you how this diagnosis was reached...

Towards the end of November 2009, Connor mentioned some pain in his right foot. We found a Plantar Wart and began treating it. We went on vacation in Germany were he mentioned a pain in his knee's, to feeling in his own words, pain 'inside his legs'. By the time we got home on December 9, he needed to be carried almost everywhere. By the end of December he was unable to feed himself, dress himself, sit up or down, lay down and of course walk. Here is a list of tests he went through between December 10 to December 28, 2009

X-ray of his Hips
MRI of his spine
X-ray of his chest
CAT Scan of his brain
CAT Scan of his chest
MRI of his chest
MRI of his hips
Numerous Blood Work
Spinal Tap
and we finished with a Muscle Biopsy

There were many speculations of what might be causing Connor so much pain and one of them was Gullian Barre Syndrom (GBS) due to his first symptoms showing up within a few days of his H1N1 Flu Shot.

The final Diagnosis came on January 11, 2010
-Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM)-

Family and Friends ...

Once again if you are on FB you know all about the fun Color Run we entered, THANKS to Pippi Howard and her girls. We had an amazing and fun team consistent of seven people, Pippi. Sophie, Thea, Kim, Grant, Evan, Alexander and I. Connor stayed at home with Ron, Oma and Opa, as he was moving better but in no way or form would he have been able to complete at 5K.
If you have a chance to sign up for this event then please do as they happen all across the US :) I was so happy with it that I already signed up for my next 5K next month, Thanks this time to Anne Begley. How great it is to have friends who try to get you out in a fun but still healthy way :)
I truly am lucky!!!

It is really refreshing to have Kim and her boys here with us. there has been a lot of laughter in the house and C & A are thrilled to have playtime with G & E :)

We also headed to Manitou Springs on Monday for some Spring Water Sampling but also to tour the town a bit. It really is one of my favorite places here in CO and I am always happy when I get to spend some time there.

Unfortunately, that evening (yesterday), Connor went again downhill and once again was unable to walk. He also had red cheeks and red eye lids again, plus complained about problems swallowing. Of course after Connor was in bed I was on the computer e-mailing Dr. Soep again who once again responded right away. This precious woman really never takes a break! She felt that we need to make a decision in the morning if he was still the same or worse we would have to take him in for a Steroid Infusion plus new labs.
Now when we got up Connor was actually able to move, stiffly but he was moving. So we brainstormed again and this time Dr. Soep and I felt we should push his Methrotrexate day one day early and give him his first Chemo Shot today, instead of tomorrow. We were lucky that Amerita send a overnight shipment and the Chemo Injections arrived today.
We are now holding off the Steroid Pulse but will go in for labs later this week. Everything of course could change should Connor start getting worse again.

So today we decided to take it easy but still fit in one promised outing for Oma and Opa before they leave on Friday. I really do not want to give them back to Germany ... but as always I have to think of my siblings who want to enjoy them as well ;)
So while the Miller Family went to tour the Fossil Beds and the Air Force Academy, we went and drove up Pikes Peak.
It was a beautiful day and Connor was able to see a lot but spend most of the time in the car resting. He did get out to have his Gem Stone search, and to walk around the Peak. We also for some wicked reason felt the need to stop at the Devils Playground for some exploring. Now only C-Springs offers you Heaven and Hell in one place ;) As the name said we faced a few challenges at the Devils Playground. I was tempted to climb around the rocks and of course had to fall and scrape myself. Only the Devil could be happy about some of my blood. I can say I have never gotten hurt at the Garden of the Gods!- haha.
Then we came back to the parking lot to see a young boy suffering from Altitude Sickness. He was about 11 years old and had been hiking the Peak with his Dad and older brother. He was very sick as in splitting headaches and cold sweat. So after giving them some more water and some Children's Tylenol we came to the understanding that the Dad and older son would hike back to their campground to get the car (which was about 4 miles away) and we would take the little boy to the Ranger Station at the Peaks Highway entry. Poor little thing was so grateful to climb in our car and sadly for himself got sick several times on our drive down. However, as I had told the Dad that the father we got down the Mountain the better his son would feel.
We dropped him in the safe hands of the Park Rangers and where on our way home shortly after that. I am happy to say I already got an e-mail that he is doing better!
At home we relaxed and enjoyed some yummy Pikes Peak Donuts :)
It was a fun ending to hear from Kim and the boys about their adventures and we are all ready to have a nice and quiet night :)

I do want to thank everyone again who has checked in with us and I admit every time you are all sending those precious messages and prayer Connor seems to peak up!

A huge Thank You goes to Kim today who took it on herself this morning to take care of all the phone calls that were on my to do list. She called Therapy places to see what they were offering in regards to Water Therapy for his PT.
THANK YOU Kim and I am so grateful for your help!

Good Night everyone!

Hugs,
