Timeline from first symptom to diagnosis

Our son Connor was diagnosed with JDM in January of 2010 and here is a bit of a timeline to show you how this diagnosis was reached...

Towards the end of November 2009, Connor mentioned some pain in his right foot. We found a Plantar Wart and began treating it. We went on vacation in Germany were he mentioned a pain in his knee's, to feeling in his own words, pain 'inside his legs'. By the time we got home on December 9, he needed to be carried almost everywhere. By the end of December he was unable to feed himself, dress himself, sit up or down, lay down and of course walk. Here is a list of tests he went through between December 10 to December 28, 2009

X-ray of his Hips
MRI of his spine
X-ray of his chest
CAT Scan of his brain
CAT Scan of his chest
MRI of his chest
MRI of his hips
Numerous Blood Work
Spinal Tap
and we finished with a Muscle Biopsy

There were many speculations of what might be causing Connor so much pain and one of them was Gullian Barre Syndrom (GBS) due to his first symptoms showing up within a few days of his H1N1 Flu Shot.

The final Diagnosis came on January 11, 2010
-Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM)-

Day 11 at CMH - with some Night 10 up - dates)

I am guessing that thanks to facebook most of you already know about the exciting night Connor and Ron went through last night.
It all started when Connor being hungry all the time wanted to eat before bedtime. He has been eating pretty much all the time even at night due to the steroids.
This time he asked for a PJ Sandwich around 9:30 PM and he ate about 1/2 of it before laying down and about 20 min after that he threw up for the first time. Ron cleaned him up and everything seemed fine until he threw up again at 11:30 PM. By then he was coughing none stop and saying his throat was hurting. He had a hard time breathing so they send him to have an x-ray of his chest taken. When they got back the doctors said there seemed to be a shadow on the bottom right lung and that they wanted him started on antibiotics right away plus hook him up on oxygen for the rest of the night since his levels had dropped to 87. He was also complaining about headaches and pain in his neck a lot.

When Dr. Miller (Rheumatoligist) showed up in the morning he said that they will postpone the surgery for the port tomorrow and are now worried about a possible pneumonia and this is why he gets the antibiotics now. He said it is common to make progress and take a step forward to then have to take 2 steps back. He also told us on the positive side of all this it was a good thing we were right here at the hospital when this happened and not at home.

Connor now has been complaining about being hungry all day but is unable to or says it to painful to swallow. He is also ordered back on soft food only and he has to stop eating by 6 PM. So now more night snacks for our dumpling.....

Oh and the surgical team showed up to talk to us about tomorrow when we told them about Dr. Millers visit. They said they will talk to Dr. Miller and check the computer but in a case where the lungs or throat are involved and he is on antibiotics the anestheologist (sp) definitely will call of the surgery for now....

So this is a bit of a set back because we were hoping to get the port in so they would not send us home without it but nerveless we are grateful for them to be on the safe side and consider any complications....

On to some positive news :) you all know by now I always finish with the good news and there are some :)
Connor did take a nap from Noon to 1:45 PM and Alexander had fun playing in the play room here on the 4th floor. He is making friends with another sibling that is his age and they have been playing together really well.
And the biggest highlight for Connor today was meeting Miss Illinois. She was very good with the kids and when Connor was shy she took extra time to sit with him and make a Valentine Card he wanted me to have. At first when I rolled him in he just wanted to sit and look at her. He was so mesmerized and I am sure thought he was with a Princess. I have to say, I am as a Mom was very impressed with Miss Illinois. Anyone that makes my boys smile is wonderful, so even thought I do not watch pageants I would vote for her :)

Maybe there will be more to post later tonight but for now this are all the news we have :)

Hugs,
R A C A
