Timeline from first symptom to diagnosis

Our son Connor was diagnosed with JDM in January of 2010 and here is a bit of a timeline to show you how this diagnosis was reached...

Towards the end of November 2009, Connor mentioned some pain in his right foot. We found a Plantar Wart and began treating it. We went on vacation in Germany were he mentioned a pain in his knee's, to feeling in his own words, pain 'inside his legs'. By the time we got home on December 9, he needed to be carried almost everywhere. By the end of December he was unable to feed himself, dress himself, sit up or down, lay down and of course walk. Here is a list of tests he went through between December 10 to December 28, 2009

X-ray of his Hips
MRI of his spine
X-ray of his chest
CAT Scan of his brain
CAT Scan of his chest
MRI of his chest
MRI of his hips
Numerous Blood Work
Spinal Tap
and we finished with a Muscle Biopsy

There were many speculations of what might be causing Connor so much pain and one of them was Gullian Barre Syndrom (GBS) due to his first symptoms showing up within a few days of his H1N1 Flu Shot.

The final Diagnosis came on January 11, 2010
-Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM)-

Day 6 at CMH on a new Floor

If you been following our night you remember we were going to move to Floor 4 Room #484.

It is now 6 AM and Connor and I are settled in and put most of our things away. How much can you collect in 6 days at a hospital???
The room is very nice and roomier then the one on the 9th floor and our new nurse is very sweet. She told us that Rheumatology shares this floor with Oncology and for Connor to not be worried or concerned when he see's children without hair.
Connor so far is in a great mood and seemed to love the move and the fact that he got to ride in his bed and use the special elevator. Small things that can make him happy!

More to come later.....

Shortly after I wrote the above Connor decided to go back to sleep which he did until 7:30 AM. His biggest concern all day has been food and when he gets hungry he wants it NOW :) All in all he was in a better disposition and today went fairly smooth. He had a few up sets but nothing major. He only got one check up from the doctors in the morning and also had his dose of medicine at 9:30 AM. He was free to do what he wanted which was as mentioned before, eat, sleep and then go on a trip with his wheel chair. When this was done we repeated it again. We did go to the play area where Alexander spend a lot of time at today and the boys played BINGO once again. Alexander was on TV several times and won a Spiderman Figurine for Connor.

I was so tired from last night that I actually fell asleep in the Parents Lounge at the Children's Play Room. And I am planning on being in bed before 9 o'clock comes around.

We did ask the Doctor today when we might be heading home and she said we should aim for the beginning of next week.

Alexander and I are now at the Kohl's House and getting ready for bed but according to Ron, Connor has been on 2 walks since we left and colored some pictures at the play room and wants to color some more now in his room plus just told Ron that he is hungry again. He is getting quiet a little budha belly by now.
His poor roommate however wants to go to bed so I am hoping Connor will slow down fast. It figures that for the last few nights he was out at 6:30 PM while everyone else on his floor was still wide awake. His roommate and family seem very nice. Sadly for them their son is here for a second Chemo Therapy Treatment and of course he prefers to sleep most of the day and night.

Okay, I could write more about today but I am to exhausted and all I can think off is going to bed.

so Good Night!
Hugs,
R A C A

  1. You guys hang in there. Thank you so much for keeping us informed. I was in/ through chicago friday night. It wouldn't have been the time to visit for any of us I'm sure. By then I had over 12 hours on the road. Sure miss those flying benifits, lol. You guys are very lucky you are in the position to take Conner to the best.
