Timeline from first symptom to diagnosis

Our son Connor was diagnosed with JDM in January of 2010 and here is a bit of a timeline to show you how this diagnosis was reached...

Towards the end of November 2009, Connor mentioned some pain in his right foot. We found a Plantar Wart and began treating it. We went on vacation in Germany were he mentioned a pain in his knee's, to feeling in his own words, pain 'inside his legs'. By the time we got home on December 9, he needed to be carried almost everywhere. By the end of December he was unable to feed himself, dress himself, sit up or down, lay down and of course walk. Here is a list of tests he went through between December 10 to December 28, 2009

X-ray of his Hips
MRI of his spine
X-ray of his chest
CAT Scan of his brain
CAT Scan of his chest
MRI of his chest
MRI of his hips
Numerous Blood Work
Spinal Tap
and we finished with a Muscle Biopsy

There were many speculations of what might be causing Connor so much pain and one of them was Gullian Barre Syndrom (GBS) due to his first symptoms showing up within a few days of his H1N1 Flu Shot.

The final Diagnosis came on January 11, 2010
-Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM)-

Day 17 at CMH

Day 17 ... crazy! I never thought we would count this high when we first arrived in Chicago.

It is 1:42 AM here and so far the night went smooth. Connor went to bed a bit before 8 PM and I followed at 9:30 PM. He woke up a bit ago for a bathroom break and then asked to go for a ride in his wheelchair but then settled for some Disney TV. What was funny is the fact that he has slept in his hospital bed now for 17 days and always hugs the right site when he sleeps and tonight was the first time he said to me to raise the railing so he won't fall out :)

So, Connor did sleep in until about 7:45 AM and was in a happy mood. He had breakfast and then wanted to go places in his wheel chair. We ended up getting my breakfast and a second one for him and then waited for the Play Room to open at 9:30 AM

It is 2 PM now and Connor had a bit of a melt down so I am trying to get him to take a nap which of course he does not agree with. Ron and Alexander went to the Kohl's house earlier due to Alexander and Ron not feeling well. The last thing we want for Connor is to catch a cold right now. I am telling you all 17 days in a hospital is really making us wonder if there is still a world outside.
Never would I have thought we still be here and miss out on the Olympics...! crazy! When we came here we were even debating if we could make it to the CureJM convention in Austin which is happening this weekend. It is amazing how priorities change and how everything that seemed so important before Connor got sick have no meaning to us anymore at all.... So really it is all in your perspective.
As to little Connor here... I can explain to you what kind of impact the drugs he is getting is having on his brain. In the last 45 minutes he went from upset, to angry to crying to being terrible sad and now laying in bed laughing. I never seen so many emotions displayed in such short time frames.

Also I do want to prepare you all in regards to how Connor's physical appearance will change in the next couple of weeks. If you have been to the CureJM web site and looked at the photo gallery you might have seen what is described as the Moon Face. This usually shows after being on high doses of Steroids after about 4 to 6 weeks. Connor does not have the moon face 'yet' but I was told it will happen fairly quick. He is getting fuller on the bottom cheeks already. So far the Steroids show him having hair growth on his back and legs, plus his biggest joy is his Buddha Belly. We had to buy bigger size underwear for him so Ron went and got some boxer shorts size 6. We got the same ones for Alexander and when he put them on they fell down to his angles, when Connor put them on they fit his belly nice and comfortable.

Another news up-date is that Connor's Room-mate was released about 15 minutes ago and we are glad they got to go home but Connor's question to them was: 'How come you came to the Hospital after us but get to leave before us?'... sounds pretty simple from his point of view :)
